Day 15: Lava!!!

Paddled 21 miles before confronting Lava, the most fabled rapid in the Canyon. Camped just downstream. For such a memorable rapid, it seemed appropriate to employ some B&W film.

A paddler touches Vulcan's Anvil, a huge piece of basalt deposited by one of the volcanic eruptions responsible for Lava Falls rapid, one mile upstream of Lava.

I think this photo (expertly shot by Catherine) justifies the B&W. Click on it to see what I mean! Scott's jest a leetle bit too far right, isn't he?

Matt entering Lava. The next 6 shots show the progress through the rapid.

I believe that's Scott's upturned boat in the upper-right corner of the photo.

Not being as far left as is recommended, I'm heading for some serious surf in the wave below. That's Jeff, on the right, with the video camera.

Looks like those two dots in the river-left eddy at the end of the rapid are Scott and Matt.

Toasting post-rapid with a bottle of tequila.

Erin, Cindy, and Chrissy with their tequila.

Scott relaxing with his shot of tequila.

A view of the river.

And another.
